Mercury contents and isotope ratios from diverse depositional environments across the Triassic–Jurassic Boundary: Towards a more robust mercury proxy for large igneous province magmatism

چکیده

Mercury is gaining prominence as a proxy for large igneous province (LIP) volcanism in the sedimentary record. Despite temporal overlap between some mass extinctions and LIPs, precise timing of magmatism relative to major ecological environmental change difficult untangle, especially marine settings. Changes contents Hg rocks through time, or ‘Hg anomalies’, can help resolve LIP activity extinctions. However, questions remain unanswered about fidelity magmatism. In particular, depositional (e.g., redox) post-depositional oxidative weathering) processes affect preservation sediments. These factors pose challenges confidently using fingerprint volcanism. Here, we use anomaly at Triassic–Jurassic boundary explore opportunities associated with two approaches that may build more robust interpretation proxy: (1) measurements sediments from diverse environments, including lithologies low organic carbon content, (2) simultaneous stable isotope ratios. We present compare records five geographically disparate Upper Triassic–Lower Jurassic sections represent nearshore, mid-shelf, deep-water, carbonate platform span emplacement Central Atlantic magmatic (CAMP) end–Triassic extinction (ETE). Total contents, compositions demonstrate multiple ways which different environments impact how anomalies are expressed ancient rocks. Although observe an increase Hg/TOC during ETE each section, pattern duration enrichment differ notably sections, not always coincident CAMP activity, illustrating filter complicates ratios alone Importantly, support volcanic origin ETE, suggesting was source interval. data isotopes distinguish loading results on global scale emphasize importance making environments.

Evaluating Total Mercury and Methyl Mercury Contents in Canned Tuna Fish of the Persian Gulf

Due to hygienic risks of mercury residues in food and marine originated supplements, measuring total mercury and methyl mercury contents of canned tuna as a highly consumable marine food product is essential. In this study, 40 canned Tuna fish (from Persian Gulf) were collected in 2015 and then flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) and thermo gas chromatography mass spectrophotometry were...

Mercury evaporation from amalgams with varied mercury contents.

This study examined the relationship between mercury content and mercury evaporation from amalgams during setting. Two different types of commercial high-copper amalgams (single composition and admixed types) were used. Cylindrical specimens of each amalgam were prepared with five different mercury contents according to ADA Specification No.1. Specimens were also prepared by hand condensation. ...

The variations of mercury in sediment profiles from a historically mercury-contaminated reservoir, Guizhou province, China.

Baihua Reservoir in Guizhou Province, China, experienced serious Hg contamination from Guizhou Organic Chemical Plant (GOCP) between 1971 and 1997. However, the biogeochemical cycling of Hg in this reservoir is not well studied. Sediment cores were collected in fall 2002, spring 2003 and in spring and fall 2004. THg and MeHg concentrations in all sediment profiles ranged from 0.26 to 38.9 mg/kg...

Magmatism on Venus: Upside-down Melting in Gravitational Instabilities and a Possible Analog in the Siberian Large Igneous Province

Introduction: On Earth magmatism occurs on continents in the absence of subduction, often producing volatile-rich magmas such as those in the Leucite Hills, the Sierra Nevada, and Peru’s Altiplano [1]]. The primary hypothesis to explain this volcanism is foundering of the lower lithosphere into the mantle. The surface of Venus displays volcanic features indicating eruption of lavas with a wide ...
